Moving to Memphis?

Tags/Registration:

Newcomers must change their out-of-state vehicle registration and obtain their Tennessee license plates at the time their residency has been declared.

If you're moving from out of the state, you must bring your current registration, title or name and address of lien holder.

If you're in the military, it is suggested that you call regarding special requirements.

Vehicle registration and tags are handled by the Shelby County Clerk's office. City residents are required to have their cars inspected. For information call: 545-4244.

Driver's License:

If you're a newcomer to the State of Tennessee, you have 30 days from the time you establish permanent residency to obtain a Tennessee driver's license.

If you have a valid license from another state, bring that license as well as one other form of identification. With a valid out-of-state license, only a vision test is required. For persons without a valid license, vision, written and driving tests are required.

For applicants under age 18, a parent must sign a financial responsibility form. They must bring their school attendance form.

A regular driver's license will cost from $12.50 to $26.50, depending on the number of years it is issued for.

All licenses are obtained through the Tennessee Highway Patrol's Driver Testing Centers. The offices are open Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-5 pm; no road testing after 4 pm.
